Itinerary
Nairobi to Mount Kenya Region - Arrival and Trek Preparation
Guests depart Nairobi for the Mount Kenya region and check into the base hotel or mountain lodge. This day should be used to prepare properly rather than rushing onto the mountain.
- Transfer: Drive from Nairobi to Naromoru, Nanyuki or the confirmed base area.
- Gear check: Confirm boots, rain gear, warm layers, gloves, headlamp, daypack and water bottles.
- Guide briefing: Meet the mountain guide/crew, review route, altitude expectations, meals, porter arrangements and safety procedures.
Naromoru Gate to Old Moses or Met Station Area
The trek begins after registration and park formalities. The first trekking day introduces forest, moorland and altitude gain.
- Park entry: Complete registration and meet the support crew.
- Trek: Walk at a controlled pace with breaks for hydration and acclimatization.
- Overnight: Stay at the confirmed mountain hut/camp, with early dinner and rest.
Trek to Shipton's Camp or High Camp
The trail climbs into more dramatic alpine scenery. This is a physically demanding day, so the guide should manage pace carefully and monitor guests for altitude symptoms.
- Morning trek: Ascend through moorland and alpine zones.
- Acclimatization: Walk slowly, drink water and take breaks as directed.
- Evening: Arrive at high camp, eat early and prepare summit layers for the pre-dawn start.
Point Lenana Attempt and Descent toward Chogoria
The summit attempt usually begins before dawn. Guests climb toward Point Lenana for sunrise views if weather, fitness and safety allow, then descend on the scenic Chogoria side.
- Pre-dawn start: Begin with headlamps and warm clothing.
- Point Lenana: Reach the trekking summit if conditions allow. Safety decisions belong to the guide.
- Descent: Descend through spectacular valleys, lakes and moorland toward the overnight point.
Chogoria Exit and Return to Nairobi
Complete the descent, meet the transfer vehicle and return to Nairobi. This day should include enough buffer because mountain weather and road conditions can affect timing.
- Final walk: Descend through forest or track sections to the exit point.
- Transfer: Drive back to Nairobi with lunch stop where arranged.
- End: Drop off at hotel or airport. Recommend a recovery night before international flights.
