Itinerary
Kampala or Entebbe to Queen Elizabeth National Park
The safari begins with an early pickup from Kampala, Entebbe or the agreed hotel. The route to western Uganda should be treated as part of the story, moving from urban Uganda into green countryside, tea landscapes, crater regions and the approach to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
- Morning departure: Start early to protect the day from traffic and allow enough time for comfort stops and lunch.
- Equator and scenic stops: Where routing allows, include photo stops, local crafts or roadside viewpoints without making the day feel rushed.
- Arrival near the park: Check in, rest and prepare for the next day of wildlife activities. If arrival is early, add a short evening drive subject to park rules and lodge location.
Queen Elizabeth Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
This day combines land and water wildlife viewing. The morning focuses on the savannah sections of Queen Elizabeth National Park, while the afternoon Kazinga Channel boat safari gives guests close views of water-based wildlife and birdlife.
- Morning game drive: Depart early with the guide to search for elephants, buffalo, antelopes, warthogs, lions where possible and other plains wildlife. The guide should explain the park landscape, crater lakes and conservation context.
- Midday rest: Return to the lodge or continue to lunch depending on the selected accommodation and activity timing.
- Kazinga Channel boat cruise: Board the boat for hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and animals coming to the channel to drink. This is one of the strongest photographic moments of the trip.
- Evening: Return to the lodge for dinner and a briefing on the transfer to Bwindi.
Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, guests travel toward Bwindi. The drive moves from savannah and crater scenery into forested highlands. This is a slower, scenic day and should be sold honestly as a transfer day with beautiful views rather than a heavy activity day.
- Scenic transfer: Drive through rural communities, plantations and highland roads, with stops for lunch and photography where safe.
- Gorilla trekking briefing at lodge: On arrival near the tracking sector, guests check in and receive practical guidance on clothing, footwear, water, packed lunch, walking sticks and porter support.
- Evening rest: Encourage an early night because gorilla trekking can be physically demanding and starts early.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi and Departure or Extension
Guests report to the park headquarters for briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Trekking time varies because gorillas move through the forest. The experience can be short or physically demanding, depending on the assigned family and terrain.
- Ranger briefing: Confirm rules: maintain distance, avoid flash photography, follow ranger instructions and declare any illness before trekking.
- Forest trek: Walk with rangers and trackers through dense forest until the assigned gorilla family is located. Once found, guests have the permitted viewing time under ranger guidance.
- Post-trek arrangements: Return to the lodge or begin the onward transfer depending on routing. Offer extensions to Lake Bunyonyi, Queen Elizabeth, Kigali or Entebbe if guests prefer a less rushed finish.
